Rumbo a Srinagar/Heading for Srinagar |

15/Agosto/2013. Después de disfrutar durante unos días de las comodidades urbanitas, estamos listos para seguir pedaleando. Leh es un pequeño oasis entre montañas peladas por la sequía y el frío y que se usa como punto de partida para excursiones a varios seismiles nevados que rodean la ciudad. A pesar del innegable encanto de su palacio construido a imagen y semejanza del de Pothala en Lhasa, nos ha decepcionado un poco el enfoque turístico que ha tomado un lugar tan recóndito. Salvando las diferencias, estar en medio de la calle de Changspa no difiere mucho de estar en Kao San road en Bangkok, Main Bazaar en Delhi o Holland road en Londres, cosas del mundo mochilero y la globalización!

August 15th 2013. After enjoying a few days of creature comforts, we are ready to start pedaling again. Leh was a little oasis hidden away in snowy mountains. Despite the undeniable charm or its palace built to resemble the Pothala in Lhasa, we came away a bit disappointed by the quantity of tourists that now overwhelm the place. Aside from a few differences, Changspa road in Leh is not really any different than Kao San road in Bangkok, the Main Bazaar in Delhi or Holland Road in London, the result of ever more backpackers and globalization!

Estos días han consistido en descansar, visitar los monasterios de la ciudad y re-planear nuestros próximos pasos. También acampamos frente al lago de Pangsong que sirve de frontera entre China e India junto con Wim y Tine, dos expertos cicloturistas belgas. Mañana retomamos la ruta ciclista hacia el oeste siguiendo el curso del Himalaya: Lamayuru, Kargil y finalmente Srinagar. Esta nueva ruta tiene 3 pasos por encima de 4000 mts pero parece ser bastante más sencilla que la de Manali-Leh. Esperamos llegar a Srinagar en unos 8 días.

These days were spent resting, visiting the city´s monasteries and revising our future plans. We also camped on Pangong Lake, which serves as a border between China and India with Wim and Tine, two Belgian cycle touring experts. Tomorrow we´ll get back on the road again, heading west through the Himalaya: Lamayuru, Kargil and Srinigar. This stretch of road has three passes over 4000m but it seems that it will be much easier than Manali-Leh. We hope to get to Srinagar in 8 days.

Y después…. pues en su día escribimos en el blog que nuestro próximo destino sería Pakistán, cruzar el Karakorum y desde China dirigirnos a Kirgizstán, Tajikistán, Uzbequistán, etc. Pues bien, después de los últimos acontecimientos en Gilgit, parece que atravesar el Karakorum no es lo más deseable en estos momentos. Nos hemos encontrado con gente que lo ha hecho, gente que quería pero no ha podido y gente que lo ha pedaleado escoltados por policía pakistaní delante y detrás de ellos. Aún cuando nos moríamos de ganas de ver las cumbres nevadas desde esa carretera, no creemos que merezca la pena correr el riesgo de quedarnos por el camino. Y como eso conlleva romper nuestra ruta, tras darle varias vueltas hemos decidido cambiar totalmente de rumbo y dirigirnos al hemisferio sur, donde ahora empieza el verano y por tanto el mejor tiempo para pedalear. Cambiamos el Himalaya por los Andes, el 7 de Set volamos a Santiago, desde donde queremos recorrer Chile y Argentina en los próximos meses.

The next stage…well, we had written on our blog that our next destination would be Pakistan, taking the Karkoram Highway until China and from there heading to Kyrgystan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, etc. However, after the recent events in Gilgit, it seems that the Karakoram isn´t the most sensible choice at the moment. We have met people on the road who did it, people who wanted to but couldn´t and even people who did it with a Pakistani police escort in front and behind. Even though we were dying to see those snowy peaks from this road, we don´t think it is worth the risk to get caught up on the road. As this event really throws a wrench in our itinerary, after much thought we decided to totally change our focus and head towards the Southern Hemisphere, where summer is starting and thus the best season for riding. We´ll trade the Himalaya for the Andes, flying the 7th of September to Santiago, Chile. We´ll spend the following block of time riding in Chile and Argentina.
